Tucson, Arizona – Today Las Adelitas announced their endorsement of Victoria Steele for election to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Arizona’s Congressional District 2. If elected, Steele would be the first Native American woman elected to Congress. Steele was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2012 and 2014 representing Arizona legislative district 9.

“Victoria is a powerhouse candidate with a proven track record as a strong advocate for women, immigrants, seniors and all of Arizona’s families,” explains Michelle Aguilera, Las Adelitas Board Chair. “She is a leader on issues that matter the most to Arizonans –equal pay, family leave, immigration reform, reproductive rights and quality education for all our children.”

Steele took the national stage in 2015 when she shared her personal story of sexual assault while testifying against Arizona Senate Bill 1318, a measure which would force women to disclose their rape and subsequent pregnancy to their insurance agency if they seeking an abortion. “Steele’s testimony of her assault as a young girl humanized the issue of sexual assault and women’s reproductive rights,” explains Aguilera. “At every turn of her career, Victoria demonstrates courage and leadership as she advocates for public policy that makes sense for Arizona.”

Las Adelitas endorsement joins that of Congressman Grijalva, every member of the Tucson City Council, nearly half of the members of the Arizona state House of Representatives and several local unions and dozens of community leaders.
