Tucson, Arizona – Las Adelitas Arizona PAC – a political action committee that encourages Latinas in Arizona to participate in the political process and support progressive issues – today has announced their endorsement of Lane Santa Cruz for Tucson Ward 1 City Council.

“We are excited to announce our endorsement for Tucson's Ward 1 City Council member, Lane Santa Cruz” said Las Adelitas Board Member Charlene Mendoza. “Her commitment to Tucson includes developing functional transportation systems, liveable communities and investment in our youth". Lane states: “Together we can build bridges and strengthen our communities. My mission is to have the conversations that matter. Let’s talk about working class people, equal outcomes not just opportunities, and getting the necessary resources in the hands of the people."

Lane is both bilingual and bicultural and a testament to the resiliency of the people in the Southwest. At her core, she is an educator and community organizer. Before returning to work as a Council Aide to the Ward 1 Council Office, she spent 12 years in nonprofits and grassroots community efforts working on sexual/gender violence, food justice, migrant rights, DIY bicycle mechanics, and Ethnic Studies. Since obtaining her Ph.D., she teaches courses in Mexican American Studies and Education at the UA and organizes community bike rides on the Southside.

Lane is running for Ward 1 because she is committed to bringing a fresh vision that is centered on bringing the needs of working families to Tucson City Hall. Tucson is such a special place and she wants to take it to the next level by being a bridge that connects more people to engage with city governance because that is democratic participation. As an engaged and effective public servant at Ward 1, she has learned that a steady urgency is what brings about long-lasting change.

Tucson, Arizona – Las Adelitas Arizona PAC – a political action committee that encourages Latinas in Arizona to participate in the political process and support progressive issues – today has announced their early endorsement of Regina Romero for Mayor of Tucson.

“As Tucson's Ward 1 City Council member for the last 11 years, she has been an ardent champion of civil rights, environmental protection and economic justice.” said Las Adelitas Arizona Board Chair Jennifer Allen. “In addition to being the best qualified candidate, she'd be the first woman Mayor EVER in Tucson's 150 years of having a mayor/council."

Regina is one of the original founding members of Las Adelitas Arizona. Her drive to represent women and working families as well as to protect our environment has earned her three terms on the City Council. While on the Council, she has helped lift Tucson out of the Great Recession to its most prosperous decade in recent history, writing the City’s Primary Jobs Incentive program and calling for the Creation of an Economic Initiatives Office – both of which have resulted in thousands of long-term, good-paying jobs. She has championed issues such as equal pay for equal work and spearheaded the successful effort to pass universal earned sick and parental leave for City of Tucson families.

As Mayor, Romero will focus on developing an economic incentive program that will help small businesses thrive in the City, and work with experts to craft a citywide climate resiliency action plan to combat the imminent threat of climate change. She will also work to ensure the delivery of core services to city residents including investing in our roads, connections for pedestrians and cyclists, making our transit systems more reliable and affordable, and enhancing our parks and open spaces for our community to enjoy.

Tucson, Arizona – Las Adelitas Arizona PAC – a political action committee that encourages Latinas in Arizona to participate in the political process and support progressive issues – today announced their endorsement of Raquel Terán for Arizona House of Representatives District 30.

We at Las Adelitas are thrilled that Raquel Terán, our 2014 Adelitas del Año, has launched a campaign for elected office,” said Las Adelitas Arizona Board Chair Jennifer Allen. “Raquel has long exemplified our ideals of supporting Latinas and their families. Las Adelitas Arizona is honored to endorse her run for the Arizona House of Representatives in Legislative District 30.

Our current state legislature is made up of 19% Latinos compared to 30% of the statewide population. Of those legislators, only 4 are women. For the past 10 years, Las Adelitas Arizona PAC has been working to open the political process for Latinas in Arizona to ensure that political leaders are more reflective of the racially diverse communities they represent.

Raquel’s strong commitment to Latinas and their families has been proven with her work over the past 12 years including fighting to protect affordable health care and women’s reproductive right’s with Planned Parenthood; increasing civic participation with Mi Familia Vota; and rallying against SB1070 author Russell Pearce resulting in his recall,” said Allen. “We are proud to call Raquel Terán an Adelita.

Tucson, AZ – Las Adelitas Vice-Chair, Gabriela Valdez issued the following statement today in response to the ongoing crisis in the United States resulting from the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy and the practice of separating children from their families.

“Las Adelitas Arizona condemns the Trump administration’s cruel zero tolerance policy at the U.S.-Mexico border as a cruel violation of the human rights of immigrant parents and children. It has been reported that between April 19th to June 18th, 2,300 children were separated and sent to detention centers and makeshift tent cities across this country. Separating family was in not required by law; this has simply been the political actions of a cruel and xenophobic administration.  The separation of children from their families has created unnecessary terror and trauma that will live with these children for the rest of their lives. Even the repeal of this practice still allows families to be held indefinitely without being seen by a judge.”

In response to this crisis, Las Adelitas Arizona is calling on all people with a conscience to stand together to denounce the policy and demand family unity as a fundamental principle of all our immigration and border policies. The organization is urging its members to tell their representatives that we will not allow deal-making that uses children as pawns. They urge their members to call on local elected officials and the Arizona governor to tell them to divest their state resources away from border enforcement practices that undermine the values of our nation and terrorize children.  They are also urging people from across the country to donate to community organizations that provide support and advocacy around immigrant and border community issues. Donations are the lifeblood for small organization and nonprofits.

Las Adelitas Arizona Post Election Statement

Tucson, Arizona – We all share in the grief and disappointment that this past election has dealt us. We took our time to process the outcome. These times are uncertain and the futures of so many of our community members seem frightening. But at this historical seeming moment we must remember all the times our people before us took up the cause and pushed for justice and equity.  While the presidential election has potential devastating effects on Latino communities, underneath that shadow are important victories including from some of our endorsed candidates.
